You will however need to familirise yourself with what the PM is telling you and adjust training and racing accordingly. The advantages of training and racing with a PM are legion. Setup all your bikes with the required BB, magnet, handlebar clip and swapping over should be a breeze. Depending on which one you have it should only take all of 2-3minutes to change it from one bike to another (record for my FSA SRM is 1min20sec). The SRM, in my mind, is still the best PM out there.

I use BootCamp on my Mac with Windows so I can run all the software like SRMWin, TrainingPeaks, Fortius VR etc etc.

GoldenCheetah is a good program however it cannot download files from an SRM, AFAIK no program on a Mac can. You don't need HR, it's "nice to know info" however training can be done very successfully without it. Crank length doesn't affect power output and if you think you are spinning out on a 53t I wager you're not (150rpm+ or you need more practise). Why do you need to change the crank arms and chainrings from road to TT? You have a SRM, it will be able to tell you whether there are any issues with power output (there won't be). The Quarq would be the wildcard in all of this. If I train with the Powertap and can correlate that to heart rate, would racing a TT with power be beneficial? It seems that if I have been on my TT bike and I have heart rate and power numbers from recent efforts, I know where the heart rate sweet spot will be, and power may not be all that important during a race.Īny opinions? My current thoughts are to perhaps keep the current Powertap, or to keep the SRM and get a crappy training-only powertap wheel that I use on my TT bike. What do you feel the advantages of TT-ing with power are, assuming you know your heart rate well? For example, I train with the Powertap and heart rate monitor. Although if it is a 2-piece BB, it pretty much eliminates using power on the TT bike, as I may damage bearings trying to pull it on and off the TT bike all of the time. The other option is moving over to a Quarq system. Perhaps it is great and will work like a charm, but I have no experience with it, so it is a bit of an unknown. Although using the SRM is a great option, it is a hassle over my current setup (I try and train on my TT bike 1-2 times a week) and swapping it out that much will get old.Ģ) The SRM is worth a lot more: I can sell it and keep my wheel, and pocket the extra $1400ģ) Not sure how Golden Cheetah will perform on my Mac.

I currently just throw the PT wheel on there, and if I have a TT, can race it with a disc cover, save for a couple of USCF NRC-level races that we do each year. Not a huge deal, but swapping rings takes longer. I can use power on that bike, but it means I have to change the crankarm and rings each time I want to train on my TT bike, or at least the crankarm. Downsides are several:ġ) I also have a BB30 compatible TT rig.

The upside is that it is probably a better system than the Powertap, and I can train on alloy clinchers and race on better tubulars while still having access to power. I am still deciding whether to use it or not. When I purchased my team bike (Cannondale Super Six Hi-Mod 1) I ordered the model with the SRM wireless.

Not the lightest setup, but good enough, as my bike still weighs 6.95kg with clinchers. I currently have a Powertap SL+ laced to a Reynolds DV46 clincher wheel.
